14 June, 2010, Dubai. Nine weeks of grueling Ultimate Frisbee culminated in a re-match of last season’s final, with the Dubai Flying Carpets taking on the DFL’ ers.

Although the match did not live up to the nail-biting encounter the two teams produced last time around, high quality Ultimate was still in the cards and in the end, it was DFL who took the crown.

The game got off to a tentative start as both teams passed the disc around in search for an opening. The Carpets Patrick tried to hit Chilly going long, but the throw was just wide.

It was DFL who got on the board first through a towering Ryan catch. But the Carpets equalized soon after through Andrea, who finished off a pretty passing play.

However, the tie did not last long as Jack set up Dina in the end-zone to get DFL up by one again. The point opened the floodgates as they started to dominate proceedings, and were soon ahead by a handful.

Chilly got one back for the Carpets when the ever-reliable Led hit him with a delectable forward-flick from a whopping forty feet.

The Carpets tried to seize on the momentum, but were met by airtight defense from the DFL boys. They restricted them to short passes and kept the disc away from their end-zone. “We tried to keep the disc moving and stay smart on defense,” said DFL’s Robin after the game.

DFL were strong offensively as well. They circulated the disc superbly and hit the open man more often than not. The height of Ryan helped as well, as he made a few smart catches closer to the stars above, than the grass below.

The game ended with Chilly, who once broke the sound barrier with a forward flick, holding on to a tight catch in the end zone to salvage some pride for the Carpets.

“I think we played pretty well,” said Chilly after the game. “Congratulations to DFL, they played a great final.”

All in all, it was an enjoyable final to watch between the two best teams in the league.

The season ended with Captain Led enlightening the players as to how he invented the game of Ultimate Frisbee decades ago, and how he proudly introduced it to the ‘nation of Dubai’.

Some more notes

• Want to pay by credit card? You can! Just goto http://DUPLAYS.com, login and click the link under “my leagues”. On the league page scroll down and click the large black button that says “update my league settings”. From there you can select PayPal and use a credit card to pay.
• If you are an individual (you don’t know your team yet), your team shirts will be provided on day 1 of league play but payment must be made at one of the locations above in advance to secure your spot!
• What if you don’t pay for your league before the start date? Your spot cannot be guaranteed until payment. Also, top choices for shirt sizes and colours may no longer be available. It’s best to pay this week. Make it a fun team night out!

Team Members
All members of a team must sign up for the league online, to be eligible to play.
Why? All communications (last minute updates, scheduling, standings) are sent only to league members. Also, there is an online waiver that must be accepted in order to play.

Schedules and Rosters will be posted 48 hours before league start date (please check your starting dates on the league page, they may have been adjusted). Each league will send a mailer to league members only the night before games begin.

DUPLAYS “Fall Season” of adult recreational and competitive sports has now been posted. Leagues begin either next week or the first week of October so sign up NOW to secure your spot!

Every team that signs up for a sport this season will receive our new “DUPLAYS Sport & Social” team shirts (six team color options: green, yellow, black, white, blue, or grey). Shirts are included in your league fees. The earlier you sign up the greater the chance you will get your 1st color choice and size.

Leagues are either 8 or 10 weeks long, with teams playing 1 night per week. This means it’s your last chance to sign up for a social sport before we start up again in Jan 2010!

A few things to note:

• Each week you will play in the same location (so please check location maps) and timings may or may not change each week (in order for you to play other teams).
• League format is that each team plays ONCE a week for say 8-10 weeks. Some leagues (i.e. basketball, football, netball) will play one game per night during a 50-60 minute slot while other leagues (beach volleyball, touch rugby, ultimate frisbee, dodgeball) may play two or three games per night during a 60 minute slot.
• If you are signing up as part of a set team, every team member (not just captains) must sign up for the specific league they are participating in this season.
• Our leagues are for those looking to stay active and increase their social network. Although some of our leagues are competitive, the main goal of all DUPLAYS leagues is to bring you fun, affordable, well-organized social sport on your weeknights!
• We have different levels of play (Recreational, Competitive) depending on your skill level. Pick what’s right for you.
• Smile. The summer heat has ended and it’s time to play outdoors again!

In the last 10 years, Ultimate Frisbee has become one of the world’s fastest-growing sports. It is played in more than 42 countries. Ultimate’s success at the college level, attracting traditional athletes from other sports like soccerand football to compete on its teams, is largely what has elevated the game to this stage.

And the rise of women in Ultimate is another crucial part of the sport’s growth. Watching these women play, one can see the athleticism that has attracted them: gorgeous arcing throws, full-extension dives, insane vertical leaps, and discs pinched out of the sky with the barest of fingertips. “I play pickup most every week, even in the winter,” said Fi Cheng, 33, who works for a solar backpack company in New York. She helps run a spring and fall league in Prospect Park in Brooklyn, and is treasurer of Westchester Ultimate Disc, the biggest Ultimate organization in the metropolitan area. “I’ve noticed a lot more women playing than when I started. There are women in their late 20s or early 30s who have been playing for 10 years now.”

The Ultimate Players Association, the governing body for the sport in the United States, has nearly 30,000 members. Total membership has risen 168 percent since 2003, when the association began breaking down membership statistics by gender. From 2003 to 2008, membership of women nearly doubled, composing about a third of total membership.

Among members, play spans from beginners’ pickup and laid-back summer leagues to elite clubs like Fury, a women’s team in the Bay Area that has won four national championships and the World Ultimate Championships last year in Vancouver.

Everyone who was there will agree that this final was a great watch, proving the point with these two teams that enjoy a drink (or four) with each other at the weekends, that what happens on field, stays on field! There was tough talking and even tougher playing.

DFL opened the scoring going 2 nil up. The Carpets reacted equaling both points. DFL then took it to 4-2. Again, the Carpets matched the 4 points. The scores were 5 all at the controversial blowing of the half-time whistle (Thank you, Emma). It was obvious in the second half that both teams had managed to get into each other’s heads and also there were tough half time talks, as, for every point scored, the other team matched straight away.

At the end of the 45 minute match the score was 8 all. Duplays’ rules state that there is no limit on extra time, game is to continue until a team wins by 2 points. The same pattern followed, with one team scoring and the opposition upping the game to equalise. The other teams watched on, cheering both teams with a mixture of banter and support, but their patience was fading fast as they could hear The Red Lion calling them for a steak sandwich and a well earned beverage. But, eventually DFL got one up on the Carpets. The next point pulled, a few cuts and short passes later, Adrian’s massive swing connected with John’s awesome catch in the end zone securing DFL’s regaining of the title.
